mini rock crawler ideas

I want to build my kid a small rock crawler he said no body so I was thinking mid/rear engine so he can see better. Now I am trying to figure it all in my head. I was going to do motorcycle motor but dropped that after the power steering pump drive stumped me. So I was thinking 3 cyl metro motor with stock auto trans with diff welded in transmission to samurai axles. But I am open to ideas.

I'm not sure about honda's automatic trans but they sell spools for the manual trans to lock them up. You could weld it also, it looks just like a ring and pinion. If the trans is not tied together it will only turn one shaft just like an open diff axle.

If you found a hydrostatic drive off a 4wd tractor that would be like an automatic.

Also just had an idea of a Polaris atv motor and transmission then run a ps pump off the motor. What you think?
