What Engines Will Fit into the Samurai?

Just kind of curious, what all engines will fit into the Samurai as a straight bolt in?

Reason I ask, I am selling one of my tintops and one guy asked if he could drop a VW Rabbit diesel into it, and of course I have no idea.

So, I figured if you guys could provide me with a list I could pass on the info to anyone that asks.

Thanks in advance!

The 1.6 td will fit, it will bolt up to the stock tranny with an adaptor. From what I have heard it is a fairly easy swap, and you can get it to run on veggie oil.

I hear the diesels are expensive to swap... but that might just be the cost of the motor itself

lockdown, you are correct, turbo desiel, sorry. The adaptor plate that I saw was like $500-$600 not sure what else is needed if he has the entire engine.

You can get the vw gas or diesel 1.6 and 1.9 engine in easy enough.

1.6 8v, 1.6 16v, 1.8, 2.0 tracker engines are easy.

Harder ones are v6 models like the chevy 4.3 and ford 4.0

this is what I used for my Sidekick VW swap.
I also have a sidekick 1.6L in my Samurai and it needs a adapter also.

I personally like the 16v with 2wd auto trans as it makes a great crawler. I have heard from many people that give up half way through the VW diesel install as it gets expensive. I am tempted to install my low mileage Vitara V6 into a tintop but I really want to make a rear engine buggy for ME, !

Make the buggy MY, you deserve it, lots of work, and lots of Zook guys running and loving your stuff!

Make a buggy, then actually take the time to run it. Like I said you deserve to enjoy some of what you've been doing for this crowd right?

How about the rotary engine out of a RX7. A local guy has one and it is supposed to rock. 100mph top speed and tons of RPMS. I found a cherry RX7 so I might grab it up. I drag race too so the RX7 may get a smallblock Chevy and my Samurai gets the rotary. The rotary uses a front engine mount so they don't look to hard to install. The guy told me it took him 8 hours to swap in.

High RPMs and zuki axles.... that math doesn't work. The rotary engines are great for high RPMs quickly, but they are not about torque and that is something a 4x4 needs to perform good on and OFF road.

I don't want to start an arguement but I think if you look into the Mazda rotary engine you will find out they have more torque at 2500rpm than a 1.6l Suzuki engine has at peak.Everyone that gives the rotary engine a bad rap do not have much experience with them. How much torque does a 1.3l engine have anyway? With 5.13 gears and a 6.5 to 1 t-case the rotary engine would have alot longer RPM range to work with and when you are geared that low you don't need alot of torque anyways. In my opinion torque would kill a Sammi axle before RPMs would.

I have a Subaru EA71 1.6 on my engine stand. Taking some rough measurements and it looks like it would go in there without too much trouble. Plus, the Subaru doesn't need any sort of ECU connections to get it running. I also have a Subaru EA81 1.8 in my shop, but it is definitely too wide.
