toyota carb swap problems

so the other day i put a new toyota 3k carb on my 1.3 to replace my stock carb. i have all vacuum ports plugged and have my vac advance running to my distributor. it is getting plenty of fuel and i can get it to start if i have it at half throttle and will rev high, but i have no bottom end or no idle it just sputters and dies. i have my air/fuel set at 2.5 turns out to start as I've been told to do so before from others. what could be my issue? I've been struggling a couple days now and need to get it running lol. any help would be great, as this is my first samurai and I'm new to all this. thanks in advance!

Have you set or adjusted the hot and cold idle screws?

I have messed around with them and have had no changes. the only thing i haven't done is modify the thermal spacer (fill slot and cut groove as many write ups suggest) I've heard from others that it is not necessary but others say it is required. could this be my issue?

I don't know about the thermal spacer issues, I slotted/filled mine. I do know when I've had carb issues with a new carb it's always a vacuum leak somewhere.

Everything I have read has said it is necessary to do the thermal block mods.

I put one on mine years back had nothing but problems with it, put the webber back on and just lived with its weekly adjustments lol
