I am not sure if it is just the third member that is messed up. i disconnected the drive shaft, twisted the pinion about a 1/4 of a turn and it sprung back into place (wheels never moved)
please help

With an open (not locked) differential, you would know if it was a snapped axle because the pinion would continue to turn all the way around.
It sounds like alot of slop in the setup. Gears do get worn (a little), bearings do loosen up (more likely) and samurai axles have alot of slop...
Wish I could be more helpful here, but if you are feeling a problem - pull the axle apart and rebuild it. It's almost 20 years old...

Sorry, I just read your post about wanting a new axle assembly... If you don't find a complete replacement you will end up rebuilding it anyway. You can do it. And you will feel better about knowing what's inside. {grin}
