Safe Boost Level? [Archive]

I have a mild 1.3 right now and would like to go with a turbo in the future. May be the distant future but someday...

I was wanting to know what a "safe" level of boost on the stock 1.3, without running new con-rods, lower compression etc...

I have spoken to GotPropane and they almost recommend running a turbo with propane due to its perceived higher octane rating and lower volatility. I wouldn’t mind building a 1.3 specifically for boost but for now I was thinking something like 5-6 psi in a blow through config with an intercooler. Any thoughts?

I know, before you say it, go with a 1.6. I don’t want to. So there. If I were to do a an engine swap I would want an entirely different engine all together. Something like a Nissan or Mitsu turbo motor. Keep it all aluminum and turbo.

5-6 psi boost....doesnt sound like much, but i grew up around hot rods and big cubic inch...

I don't think there would be a problem around 5-6lbs. Any more and you may need a intercooler or meth.

No more than 8psi, 5-6 should be good on stock internals. much more than that and you will have a new window, in the block. :funny:

I chose 5-6 psi as a VERY safe number. The factory compression on the non-fuel injected 1.3 is something like 8.5 which is very low for a non-turbo engine. On my WRX I ran 17psi daily but I also ran alcohol injection just in case...

Are the blocks of the g13a not very strong? Or is it that they don't have any way to adjust timing that makes them so week? I can't figure out a good reason to cap the compression at 8.5 on the 1.3... Maybe it's just me. It seams if I ran good gas (91 or greater) there isn't any reason that the compression could not be bumped up to 10-1.

I was running 22-24 lbs of boost on a dodge daytona. I even beat a couple 5.0 mustangs but some of that was because of the driver.
