Yup its been done. Should look like this.jamminzz
2.8's have problems with the intake manifold shifting after 90-100K.
This causes lots of water to take up space meant for oil,and it doesn't mix well, not to mention it is hard on bearings.
Earlier ones were also know to take out the thrust bearing and rear main seal.
The 3.1 is a little better, but the 3.4 is the way to go,it is the crate replacement for the S10 and Camaros with the 2.8.
It is direct bolt in other than no provision for a manual fuel pump.
The 2.8 stock hp is around 117,depending on application, the 3.4 is closer to 170.
A few yrs back i decided i wanted to do something a little different for the 2.8in my XJ.
I took a 2.8 block,3.1 crank from a FWD, 3.4 rods and pistons (9.5-1 CR)internally balanced to .5 Gram rotating mass, heads and intake Extrude Honed.
Anyway when all was said and done it Dyno'd at 227 HP at the rear wheels.
Was it worth it,sure if you have an xtra 3K laying around, would i recommend it,NO.
I would go with the 4.3 as you have more and stronger tranny options.
For the amount of wt your adding, you would be better off getting all the HP you can to go along with it.
the 4.3 will give you more torque down low in the RPM range, where the 60 degree V6 is more in the top end.
you will have more fuel delivery options avail,TBI or MPI come to mind.
If you already have the 2.8 use it,if you don't ,i wouldn't waste the money.
By the way,if you do this conversion i know of a cheap way to convert over to TBI for the earlier engines.

I started putting in a rebuilt 2.8: from a 86 blazer because i got it for free($300) and quickly realized that a slightly built 1.6 could do the same without the hedache. Do yourself a favor DONT DO IT.toast Go with the 1.6 or if you really want the chevy v6 do the 4.3 and never look back. I also heard of someone getting adapters from MIster 4x4 and droping in a 305.:D :D

I've been checking out the 3.4 offroad crate motor. Way more torque than a 4.3 and I'm told alot lighter too.
where are you getting the 3.4 and how much is it???

Any Chevy dealer. The last time I checked they were about $1600.
A buudy put one in a mid-engine sand rail with Holley Projection & runs awesome.
I have that holley projection I was going to put it on 4.3 in my sammy but I just don't have the money right now.
