I've got a set of 82ish yota axles. I'm wondering if I should go to a 5.29 R&P gear set. A local guy has a set (front and rear) for $200. Genuine Gears, brand new. I've got the Petrowrks GRSII tcase with 4.89 gears and I'm running 33" tires. My main concern is highway speeds. I need to have my rig be capable of running 60 mph without too much effort. I've got a 1.6l 16v. Would this make my gear range too low for highway speeds? Should I just stick with the 4.10 that's in the yota axles already?
Thanks.

I think it will be to low geared for highway use. Maybe with a bigger tire it will be ok with the 16v.

If you have the early year Tranny your rpm's will be 2734 if your Hi range ration is 1:1 in the t-case.
2975 rpm with newer tranny.
That dont seem to bad.
With 4.10 gears it will be (older tranny)2119 and (newer tranny) 2306 rpms @ 60 mph
I dont know what your hi range ratio out of the t-case is so i assumed 1:1. there is not a lot of info on the 4.89 case from petroworks
The next thing is either setting the gears up yourself or have someone do it.

I've got a 16v, stock trans(87), and with my 4.9 TT case (stock case is in now for highway/DD useage.), 4.62's at 65 mph it was right about 4100 rpms IIRC. With my stock case it sits about 3500 at 65.
I personally would either try and find a set of 4.30 thirds from a 79-80 toy axle, or keep the 4:10 if your going to use it on the highway much.

Hmm, yeah. The 5.29 does seem a bit too low for my use. 4.88 would seem to be about right but 4.10 will do me for now I suspect.

YEP, I going with 5:29 in the buggy project. I will never see 60 mph. Stick with what you got. Give me the number to the local guy so I can get those gears you were talking about.

Every one is telling me I should stick with the stock 4.56's my Toys came with, but I WANT to be lower. I'm more woried about trail preformance than road preformance.
If anyone get's behind me, they'll just have to drive slower....lol

Im running all toyota running gear and 38.5 SX's with 5.29's. They work very well for me. Ive also got a V6 third member, 4140 chromeoly axles and a full floater kit in the back. I think they are a good choice if you've done your math correctly.

Well....I drove it for the first time yesterday with the new tires, and I HAVEN'T done my 1.6 swap yet, but I barely had 4th gear on the flats, and forget about anything but 3rd and 2nd on the steep hills....
Looks like I REALLY need the 5.29's
