Hi everyone. I have come to the point where my Sami engine just isn't running like new, it's pretty beat. Was searching around for other than Sami engines for it and ran across a 5.0 Mustang engine for a great price. I could be that in my Sami but my fiancee has been wanting one for a while in his 4runner and it would be great for towing, esp with an auto that he will be putting in. I will be taking his 22RE and putting it in my Sami. We have a manual tranny at home, but I think I'm going to go auto, since they can fit easier in and it would be nice not to stall. A friend of mine did the 22RE, auto and stock Sami case since he had just put new gears in it and didn't want to give it up and loved how it all worked.
We will have all of the parts and everything to have it ready to drop in since it will be coming straight out of the 4runner.
What will be attempted to be done. 22RE into a Toy auto into a Sami case
Now the big question, never have doing this before, seen pics ect, how do I fit it in my Sami, what do I need to do to make this engine swap go smoothly with limited issues? the more suggestions/help/pics the better
Finally more power/torque, yeahh!
Thanks ahead!

Talk about a wiring nightmare! If you went with the 5 speed, you could use the toyota transfercase. They have great gearing options as well as the possibility of double transfer cases. Another benefit would be a center output incase you ever went toyota axles (that is unless you already have them).
Good luck with the swap. I'm rooting for you!
Also: You could use a Megasquirt Computer instead of the Toyota one for ease of installation. And its Cheap!!

Thanks for the information, greatly appreciated. I just recently installed 4:1 gears in my Sami, so I'm going to hold onto that until my finacee needs gears in his Sami, then I'll convert over. I hope to grab some Land Cruiser axels a friend of mine has later on, but for now my Sami axels should be good. I'm excited to get a better engine in my Sami. It will be a little bit since my fiancee needs to get the mustang engine swaped in and stuff but it'll all be good.

Looking forward on your write up. I know we have some toyota samurai's on our board that will help you with the install.

the wiring is not as bad
as it looks, just mark everything when you take the harness out, stuff that goes to the heater and other random crap can be cut out.

It'll all work out. It'll be a little bit of time before the swap will be done. We want to have everything together, to be able to take it out of the Toy, drop it in mine, and then drop the Mustang engine into his. Going to start selling my old Sami stuff to fund the swap when it's ready to go.
I'm not sure if I should run a 2wd auto tranny and use the stock case, or use a 4wd auto tranny and Toy case. Then my fiancee can have gears for his Sami and I can regear the Toy case with the gear packages from Marlin Crawler, since they are pretty decently priced.
Lots of possibilities. Hoping that someone on this board, when the time comes will be able to help with the swap. We've got the garage for it and will need the help.
If anyone is interested in helping us out with the time comes, please send me a message.

what year models were the 22REs in??? My dad has found an old 4Runner at a junk yard. He just saw it from the road. What are my chances of it having a set of axles as well as a decent motor in it????

I would run a tranny and case that way when you use toy axles all you have to do is have them shortend and the out puts are in the right place

ok, thanks. I hope to in the near future be running Land Cruiser axels. A friend of mine has a set of them from his late 60's early 70's cruiser for a good price or trade for some project land cruiser help. They have the off center diff like the Sami's. I would get a better deal of those than finding a front Toy axle. Lots of goodies I want to do. Now where did I put that winning lottery ticket. hehehe.

DAMN! jerk of a guy. I told him I want the Ford engine and called him up last night telling him I'll be there wednesday night to pick it up, and what does he do, he sells it to someone else. That is the 2nd time that I've told someone I've wanted whatever it was, what day I'll be there and they sell it right out from under me. Grrrrrr. Oh well, time to look for another. Maybe just look for a Toy engine and then my finacee can keep his. Then one less rig that will be out of comission for a while, which is a good thing with the luck we have with vehicles.

I believe the sami engine weighs about 90 lbs.
Dont go Toy! Just turbo your 1.3L!!
joshjohnbaun
04-29-2006, 12:06 AM
can you turbo the 1.3??? what turbo would you use and what would it take to turbo it?
Froad'r
04-29-2006, 12:16 AM
Hell yeah you can turbo a 1.3L! I'm about to do it to mine!! I'm getting a small nissan or mitsubishi turbo from the junkyard; one that already has a wastegate on it. You only need to run like 5 or 7 lbs of boost. At least that will keep it naturally aspirated on 'cheap fuel'.
You can figure out the jetting on a carb if you like but I'm going Megasquirt fuel injection. Its a simple cost effective way to get a fuel injection EDU that only controls fuel and not spark. And the great part is, even a dumb like me can figure out how to tune it.

hm interesting, im guna have to look into that, what is the price for the Megasquirt fuel injection stuiff?

The controller is $180, then its recommended you get a relay board and simulator so ultimately it comes to just under $300. You don't have to have the relay board though ($60).
P.S. You do need to have some soldering skills since you have to put it together yourself.

ehhh would have to get someone to do that one for me... my soldering skills... lets just say there would be some mighty blobs hah
