I am looking at TT 4.9 Rock Monster gears, they are on sale for $475 no core.
I have 5.12's going in with the new axles,i run 32" TSL with the stock 1.3.
Think this will be enough gear?
I run mostly trails and rocks, don't do mud except for the occasional winter runs where there is snow/mud mixed on the trails.
I trailer my junk so i'm not concerned about driving on the road, unless someone elses POS breaks and i have to haul them.
Or should i wait and go with 6.4-1's?
Thanks,
Z

I'm running 33's with 5.12's and a 6.4 tcase. It's almost too low. Almost.

So is that a "yes it will work"or a "quit being a cheap SOB and pony up more for the 6.4's" :)

The 6.4's make me very happy in the rocks, but not on the highway... You have a trailer so you should always be happy.:D (accept in the mud)

...TT 4.9 Rock Monster gears...I have 5.12's going in with the new axles,i run 32" TSL with the stock 1.3.
4.9s will give you a crawl ratio of 91:1

Or should i wait and go with 6.4-1's?
6.4s will give you a crawl ratio of 119:1

A post on PBB I found informative regarding crawl ratio: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=419689&highlight=crawl

I didn't. I was too embarrassed. I forgot but the last time I figured it out, I was at something like 58:1 crawl ratio. I want the OTT dual t-case set up, but due to money (or lack thereof) I'm going to mate the 16v I have with a four speed auto (I already have it). Hopefully that will improve my driving because since I put the new clutch in (it grabs more than the last one) I truly suck on the rocks. Looks like my first day driving a clutch..

I was trying to figure out mine and didn't know the ratio on the tranny, so I found this. mods please correct them if their wrong.
Samurai stock spec
1st 3.652
2nd 1.947
3rd 1.423
4th 1 or 0 not sure
5th 0.795
Reverse 3.466

Transfer Case
Low (4WD) 2.268
High 1.409

I came up with a crawl ratio of 66.747 on my DD low rider mall crawler
http://www.izook.com/gearcalc.htm where I got my numbers

Well, I have the same info as you for the stock gears:
1st = 3.652
tcase = 2.268
axle gear = 3.73

So, 3.652 x 2.268 x 3.73 = your crawl ratio = 30.89 by my calculator.

Right?

Just checked the izook link and got the same.

Ordered the gears from TT this morning, should go out today .
Seeing as they are only down I-5 a liitle ways i hope to have them Mon or Tues.
If these don't do the trick,i have a spare transfer case so i will set up another with the 6.4-1 s and see if it works any better.

Never done any Zuk ones before, just Dana's.

not bad at all... The first time one of other guys saw me set up a brand new ARB with 5.12's - by feel - he nearly had a cow. Then he checked it with the calipers and they were dead on. He doesn't doubt me now.

So after i set them up can i just go out and hammer the shit out of them,or do i have to break them in.
I am a procrastonater and would probably wait until the nite before a run to do it .
I was looking on the WWW and it looks like (yuck) Crapmini has some good instructions on the site.
figure it can't be too bad,a few shots of Crown,a good cigar and i'll be ready :)

Oh,i'm referring to T/C gears

I would say no but I'm not for sure. I cant see the breakin period takeing that long at all. If it was an 8/1 trail only buggy, how would you put easy miles on it to break it in? Don't see why other gears would be any different.

Zee

diff gears have a break in period thats why i was wondering.
