trying to decide which way to go to move forward on my sami.
I am going to to put full width axles under it(for sure) and am trying to decide if a motor and tranny swap(switch to 350 or iron duke with sm465) to a sami case or just keeping the motor/tranny/t-case I have which runs good and putting in the 5 to 1 t-case gears. I have never wheel'd a low power vehicle with good gearing and am not sure how capable it will be.

some of you guys with experience with this...please give your 2 cents.

I would go with the gears, then the axles. I run a 1.3L, 14 bolt rear, D44 front and 39.5" IROKS and the 1.3 does pretty well with the 6.5:1 Tcase gears.

I am swapping in a 1.6 16V soon. I think the weight of a 350 ruins what advantage a Samurai has of being light.

Also what axles and size tires are you planning on running?

You should also meet up with Hardline, OKIE ZUK and I one day and we will let you drive one of ours to see which set up you like.

I vote gears, and then see how you like it.

id do the t-case and ring&pinion gears. you should be just fine with the 1.3bigok . like Tx-Zuki said anything bigger than the 1.6 tracker sidekick motor would weigh to much and defeat the purpose of the sami. hope this helps

I have a 1.6 8v and a 5.14 case with GM 10 bolt F/R and 38" tsl. My recomendation would be gears and engine mods but not a swap. I agree with Tx_zuki on the reason a zuk is good is because of the light weight and the engine swap would add too much weight. My .02

a agree with the gears first too.

5.71 in the diffs and 6.4:1 in the case and with 38's I actually can get it above 40...

Wheel'n without power is a BLAST!!! I've drive heeps and toyotas and fords in the rocks and dirt and would still never trade my zuk for one. You just can't feel the obstacles as well with tons of power (if that made any sense).

Go gears! I had the 4.16 and loved 'em.
