is hydro assist street legal. I know full hydro isnt and obviously ps is but isnt hydro assist a ps pump and a hydro ram mounted on the axle? Would this be good for highway driving as well as off road. What is the typical price for the ram or pump. Could I use my own pump and run the new ram? Would a chevy astro pump be enough flow/pressure to run a hydro ram? Please help!!!

As far as I know, it isn't legal. Unless you have vehicle inspections, or kill someone in an accident, I don't know many cops that would look, or even know what to look for. There's some kind of valve that "self centers" the steering, so the steering wants to return to center. A friend who runs 42s on an XJ uses it. He doesn't drive it on the street, but he says the self centering works well. Sorry I wasn't more help.

I appreciate any info. I will be running 38 and dont want to do a z link to my full size chevy axles. I am thinking about hydro assist because my neighbor gets it a wholesale. I will drive it on street and highway if I get the tires covered.

is hydro assist street legal.

Yes I beleve hydro assist is street legal.

isnt hydro assist a ps pump and a hydro ram mounted on the axle?

It is a ps going to your stock steering gear that has been drilled and tapped for the hydro lines, from gear it then goes to the ram.
Ram is attached at one end to your axle and the other end is attached to the tie rod.

Would this be good for highway driving as well as off road.

Yes, I love mine on and offroad.

What is the typical price for the ram or pump.
I run this ram.

Yes you could use your pump with a new ram, It wont have the flow or presure of an after market pump, but tons of guys use there stock pumps with hydro assist. There are ways of bumping up the presure and flow of a stock pump.

You never asked about your steering gear, so you may allready know this, but you will have to drill and tap the steering gear for two extra hydro lines.

is hydro assist street legal.
Look in your state inspection laws, some states are different. In Texas it is legal for the assist.

I know full hydro isnt and obviously ps is but isnt hydro assist a ps pump and a hydro ram mounted on the axle?
You still have steering box and a drag link with a ram to "assist" the steering box.

Would this be good for highway driving as well as off road. Yes What is the typical price for the ram or pump.
LINK (http://http://westtexasoffroad.homestead.com/hydrosteering.html) this is one of many places that sell a hydro assist set up.

Could I use my own pump and run the new ram? Yes, but you would have to have your steering box tapped.

Would a chevy astro pump be enough flow/pressure to run a hydro ram? Yes, but most people go to an aftermarket pump. If you want hydro assist you still need the steering box and a connected drag link because if the hydrolic ram busted a hose you still have steering from the box. This is why full hydro is not legal.

Thans guys. I have a tracked pump and gear box. The pump will be replaced. Would a astro van of wrangler pump be enough and which one is better? Would the tracker gear box be enough strengt? Right now the name of the game is super cheap. This sucks because I want strenght and cheap gets not that. Send me a pic of your hydro assist. I guess I was thinking of going full hydro. So I can put a steering arm now and assist it with hydro later when funds are better? If you know where to get law info I am in Utah. Thanks in advance.
